Q. 1. (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below: (12) [16]
| This is what Camus meant when he said that “what gives value to travel is fear”- disruption, in other words, (or emancipation) from circumstance, and all the habits behind which we hide. And that is why many of us travel not in search of answers, but of better questions. I, like many people, tend to ask questions of the places I visit, and relish most the ones that ask the most searching questions back of me: “The ideal travel book,” Christopher Isherwood once said, “should be perhaps a little like a crime story in which you’re in search of something.” And it’s the best kind of something, I would add, if it’s one that you can never quite find. I remember, in fact, after my first trips to Southeast Asia, more than a decade ago, how I would come back to my apartment in New York, and lie in my bed, kept up by something more than jet lag, playing back, in my memory, over and over, all that I had experienced, and paging wistfully though my photographs and reading and re-reading my diaries, as if to extract some mystery from them. Anyone witnessing this strange scene would have drawn the right conclusion: I was in love. When we go abroad is that we are objects of scrutiny as much as the people we scrutinize, and we are being consumed by the cultures we consume, as much on the road as when we are at home. At the very least, we are objects of speculation (and even desire) who can seem as exotic to the people around us as they do to us. All, in that sense, believed in “being moved” as one of the points of taking trips, and “being transported” by private as well as public means; all saw that “ecstasy” (“ex-stasis”) tells us that our highest moments come when we’re not stationary, and that epiphany can follow movement as much as it precipitates it. |

Q. 2. (A) Read the following extract and complete the activities given below: (12)
| Love is a great force in private life; it is indeed the greatest of all things, but love in public affairs does not work. It has been tried again and again; by the people of the Middle Ages, and also by the French Revolution, a secular movement which reasserted the Brotherhood of Man. And it has always failed. The idea that nations should love one another, or that business concerns or marketing boards should love one another or that a man in Portugal should love a man in Peru of whom he has never heard - it is absurd, unreal, dangerous. 'Love is what is needed,' we chant, and then sit back and the world goes on as before. The fact is we can only love what we know personally. And we cannot know much. In public affairs, in the rebuilding of civilization, something much less dramatic and emotional is needed, namely tolerance. Tolerance is a very dull virtue. It is boring. It is negative. It merely means putting up with people, being able to stand things. No one has ever written an ode to tolerance, or raised a statute to her. Yet this is the quality which will be most needed after the war. This is the sound state of mind which we are looking for. This is the only force which will enable different races and classes and interests to settle down together to the work of reconstruction. The world is very full of people appallingly full; it has never been so full before, and they are all tumbling over each other. Most of these people one doesn't know and some of them one doesn't like. Well, what is one to do? If you don't like people, put up with them as well as you can. Don't try to love them, you can't. But try to tolerate them. On the basis of that tolerance a civilized future may be built. Certainly, I can see no other foundation for the post-war world. |

It’s true that 'Love and tolerance are the true indicators of a civilized person.' Without love we can’t build good relationships. It is a great force to develop greatest things. In the same way, tolerance helps us to deal with other unknown persons with peace and proper ways. It builds healthy relationships between different races and classes.

Love and tolerance are the important forces to develop sound relationships after post war. Love is greatest of all things in private matters while tolerance is the main instrument to rebuild civilization. We can love what we know personally so in common area it is not usful. Here we have to use tolerance. So love and tolerance can help to build a civilized society. Both are the important foundation of civilized world.

About Poem and poet: The poem ‘The Inchcape Rock’ is written by the Poet Laureate of England Robert Southey. Some of his short poems are very popular with the school children. The poem describes jealousy and its harsh impact.
Title of the poem: The poem ‘The Inchcape Rock’ has taken as its title the name of the legendary rock which is the centre of all the events.
Theme: If you do bad things to people, bad things will happen to you
Poetic Device: The Inchcape Rock is written in the form of a ballad. Figures of speech like alliteration, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia and repetition are used here. As the poem was written in 18th century, it is rich with symbol, imagery and archaism. The rhyme scheme used in the poem is ‘a a b b’.
Message of the poem: The poem gives us a message that those who do wrong things will meet with due punishment.
My opinion about the poem: I like the poem very much as it contains a good moral story.

Good morning, everyone. Honourable chairperson, respected judges, respected teachers, and my dear friends! As a participant of this elocution competition, I would like to speak on the topic,’ Green Revolution'.
Friends! You might have heard the words like Industrial Revolution, Political Revolution, White Revolution and Green Revolution. What is Revolution? Yes, it means a great change often as a result of progress. And what is the Green Revolution? Right. Green Revolution means the change in agriculture. It is associated with agricultural production. It resulted in increased production of food grains.(Especially, wheat and rice)
Well, friends, can you tell me the name of a person who used the term Green Revolution, first? Yes, it was used by William S. Gaud from the U.S. While Norman Borlaug is called the father of Green Revolution in the world.
Friends, I think, you know the father of Indian Green Revolution. Correct. Monkomb Sambasivan Swaminathan (M. S. Swaminathan).
Friends, we all know that our country is an agricultural country .In the past, farming was being done in a traditional manner i.e. ploughing, cultivating ,harvesting were done manually. Our Indian agriculture depends on the monsoon. There is no guarantee of rain. So, there is no guarantee of yielding. That's why Indian agriculture is called the gamble on monsoon. Most of the people died of famine.
But now the situation is quite different. Most of the work of farming is being done with the help of machines like tractors, harvesters, Cultivators and so on. There are many hybrid seeds that give more yielding. Green Revolution increased the availability and use of fertilizers, weedicides, pesticides, sprays to reduce the damage or loss of the crops.
Friends, everything has two sides, good and bad. Likewise, the Green Revolution also has two sides i.e. advantages and disadvantages. Its benefits are, it reduces greenhouse gas emission and it has helped to reduce the occurrence of famine and malnutrition. But it has some disadvantages such as soil degradation due to the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers or irrigation, water pollution, health problems due to pesticides, increase mosquito borne disease, reduce ground water level etc.
Friends, on seeing the advantages and disadvantages, we come to know that disadvantages are much more than the advantages. Anyway, it's today's need. So, we should look at it positively as it increases the production of food grains to feed the increasing population.
Friends, I hope you understood the concept of Green Revolution. We have to change ourselves as per the present situation. So, be positive, think positive.

It was a time when new technologies and farming practices were introduced to increase food production and address the global food crisis.
During this period, scientists and researchers developed and promoted high-yielding varieties of crops, such as wheat and rice. These new crop varieties were more resistant to diseases, pests, and environmental conditions, resulting in higher yields. Additionally, modern irrigation methods, like the use of sprinklers and drip irrigation, were implemented to ensure efficient water usage and maximize crop growth.
Chemical fertilizers also played a crucial role in the Green Revolution. They provided essential nutrients to the soil, boosting crop productivity. Farmers were encouraged to use these fertilizers to replenish soil nutrients and achieve better yields.

Answer-
Narrator E. R. Baithwaite is one of the major characters of the novel- "To Sir, With Love'. He is the victim of racial discrimination. He had to become a teacher as there was no option. But when he became a teacher, along with the students, he also changed. He developed patience and changed his ways of dealing with students. He has a strong determination to bring good change in his students. He was a sensitive person too. He proved himself as a good teacher in the end. He is the character who brings a positive change in his students. He is patient, determined, optimistic and student friendly person. So his character is remarkable.
(ii) Consider 'student-teacher relationship' as one of the themes of ‘To Sir With Love’. (2)
Answer-
The narrator is a very sensitive person. When he joined the school, he had a very difficult time with the students. They were disrespectful, ill - mannered and mischievous. They harassed him from the very first day. But he didn't lose his patience. He used new ideas and techniques with patience that helped him to bring a significant change in his students. During the half-yearly report of the Student's Council. The students showed a remarkable change in their behaviour. They showed their courteous behaviour to students and the teachers. He developed good habits and qualities in students. He transforms the students into good citizens. The narrator felt proud of his students. So, it is true that student - teacher relationship is one of the themes of ‘To Sir With Love’.

(i) Appreciate Phileas Fogg as the protagonist of ‘Around the World in Eighty Days.’ (2)
Answer-
Phileas Fogg is the hero and chief protagonist in the novel. He accepts the wager to preserve his honour and prove his worth. He wants to show the members of the Reform Club that he can do anything he sets out to do. He spends nearly all of his money along the way. He just wants to prove himself right. This shows that for Fogg, honour is more important than money. He is honest, brave, calm, proud, generous, obstinate, and unselfish person. Phieas Fogg is adventurous man. He likes to face challenges. He hardly loses his patience. He is well informed and well aware of the changing world. His impact is really unforgettable.
(ii) The most interesting part of the extract ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ is its climax. Discuss. (2)
Answer-
Philease Fogg is the central character of the novel. He makes a wager of going around the world in eighty days. He completes his journey overcoming all the obstacles. He has to face unexpected delay due to arrest. Finally, he reaches London but feels that he loses the bet. He comes home. He remains calm and does not blame anyone. But at the end he knows that he can win the bet as he gains one day when he crosses the International Date Line. At the end he wins the wager as well as the love of a charming woman. So, the most interesting part of the extract ‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ is its climax.

Mary Morstan shows no hesitance in discussing the case in Dr. Watson's presence. She insists Dr. Watson on hearing the case along with Holmes. She opines that he may prove invaluable assistance to solve the case. She requests him to be with Holmes. She insists Dr. Watson visit Lyceum theatre with appealing eyes. Her expressions shows her emotions. All this shows that Mary Morstan encourages Dr. Watson to get involved in her case.
(ii) Write the importance of various places such as ‘Holmes’ residence, Lyceum Theatre and unknown destination with reference to ‘The Sign of Four.’ (2)
Answer-
Holmes' House: It is the center of the events. It is Holmes’ office too. The action begins and ends at this house.
Lyceum theatre: It is the place where the party has been called. This is the place near which the unknown writer of the letter asked Mary Morstan to reach if she desired to get justice. Here Holmes confirmed the sender’s identity and initiated the next journey.
Unknown place (House): It is a questionable, forbidding neighbourhood and inhabited house. It is a remote area. It increases the mystery and suspense of the story.
