Q.1. Read the extract and complete the activities.  (13)

Extract:-
What in the world are you going to do now, Jo?" asked Meg one snowy afternoon, as her sister came tramping through the hall, in rubber boots, old sack, and hood, with a broom in one hand and a shovel in the other.
"Going out for exercise," answered Jo with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes.
"I should think two long walks this morning would have been enough! It's cold and dull out, and I advise you to stay warm and dry by the fire, as I do," said Meg with a shiver.
"Never take advice! Can't keep still all day, and not being a pussycat, I don't like to doze by the fire. I like adventures, and I'm going to find some."
Meg went back to toast her feet and read Ivanhoe, and Jo began to dig paths with great energy. The snow was light, and with her broom she soon swept a path all-round the garden, for Beth to walk in when the sun came out and the invalid dolls needed air. Now, the garden separated the Marches' house from that of Mr. Laurence. Both stood in a suburb of the city, which was still country like, with groves and lawns, large gardens, and quiet streets. A low hedge parted the two estates. On one side was an old, brown house, looking rather bare and shabby, robbed of the vines that in summer covered its walls and the flowers, which then surrounded it. On the other side was a stately stone mansion, plainly betokening every sort of comfort and luxury, from the big coach house and well–kept grounds to the conservatory and the glimpses of lovely things one caught between the rich curtains.
Yet it seemed a lonely, lifeless sort of house, for no children frolicked on the lawn, no motherly face ever smiled at the windows, and few people went in and out, except the old gentleman and his grandson.
To Jo's lively fancy, this fine house seemed a kind of enchanted palace, full of splendors and delights which no one enjoyed. She had long wanted to behold these hidden glories, and to know the Laurence boy, who looked as if he would like to be known, if he only knew how to begin. Since the party, she had been more eager than ever, and had planned many ways of making friends with him, but he had not been seen lately, and Jo began to think he had gone away, when she one day spied a brown face at an upper window, looking wistfully down into their garden, where Beth and Amy were snow–balling one another.
"That boy is suffering for society and fun," she said to herself. "His grandpa does not know what's good for him, and keeps him shut up all alone. He needs a party of jolly boys to play with, or somebody young and lively. I've a great mind to go over and tell the old gentleman so!"

Though no one's caring very much or knowing.
And suddenly that summer near the end of May,
I found a tree had come to stay.
It was very small, five months child,
Lost in the tall grass running wild.
Goats ate the leaves, the grass cutter scythe
Split it apart and a monsoon blight
Shrivelled the slender stem...... Even so,
Next spring I watched three new shoots grow,
The young tree struggle, upward thrust
Its arms in a fresh fierce lust

I wasted my valuable time in worthless activities. I spent my time with the outsider elder students. We went to see films in the theatre. I also went to wandering in many places bunking the lectures. I liked their company as they behaved like tom boy and didn’t care the world.  My father was transferred in another district and came only once a month. My mother couldn’t notice my changed behaviour as I told her many fake stories. In the first term exam, I was not able to write correct answers. So the inevitable happened. I get almost zero marks in most of the subjects. I realized my mistake. My parents were really surprised and they scolded me. They stopped speaking with me.
In such depressed mood my class friend Tushar came to meet me. He knew everything. I repented over my folly. He consoled me. He advised me to make efforts to change the situation. He gave belief to my parents that he could handle the situation. He came daily to my house. He studied with me every day. He gave confidence to me. He cleared all my difficulties in my study. He behaved so kindly that I overcame from that situation. In the prelim exam I got very good marks. I made my parents happy. My teachers also surprised seeing the change in me. They appreciated me. Indeed my friend did such a great work that he made me feel happy and accepted with his well-timed help.

Views on New Text Book - Std. XI

Jr. College Eng. Teachers’ Group 1

Prof. Tushar Chavan
Writing skill has six topics.
1) Expansion of ideas
2) Blog writing
3) e mails
4) Interview
5) Film review
6) The art of compering

These are new writing skill topics.
These are really new and challenging topics for the students of Std XI.
I always suggested to include e mail and blog writing. I am happy that they are included.
Film review is definitely innovative topic. Our students like films so they can write good reviews. Shall we need to show them films for review practice? 😊 Just kidding.
It is also a new topic. Our students like it.
Interview is old topic. It is really nice.
Blog writing is need of today's age. I reached five lakh persons through my blog. It is really good media to share information.
Expansion of ideas is good. It is already in the syllabus of Std. tenth. e- mail is essential. Many science students create their own e mail when they have to fill their CET online forms. So it is good for them. Letters are not so used today. So I advocated to replace it by e mail.
The art of compering is also new topic. It is essential topic. It is need of modern times.
These all writing topics are good.  To introduce them to the students is challenging.
We should ready for it.
All are requested to share your views on writing skill topics.
Do you think they are good or not?
Express your views freely.
All are requested to go through the text book and share your opinions about the book.

Prof. Shweta Patil
[4:58 PM, 10/07/2019]:
Truly innovative topics for writing skills
But rural students would find expansion of idea quite difficult
Film review too.

Prof. C.N.Patil
[5:01 PM, 10/07/2019]:
Sir what's about Arts students. They can't write subjects name in English. I think except interview all topics are challenging for them.

Prof. Hanuman Lohar
[5:10 PM, 10/07/2019]:
Prof. Tushar sirji congratulations ....your raised points are included 👏🏽But expansion an idea little bit challenging to the  Art's students and rural too but we have to do now. ok we r ready. Blog is also challenging .If there are clues or points then it may be possible to write ...otherwise ok

Prof. Kiran Kulkarni, Jamner
[5:31 PM, 10/07/2019]:
These topics are very difficult for students of arts. Particularly in rural area

Prof. Pravin Singh
[5:41 PM, 10/07/2019]:
Making a blog and email is the topic which is already included in I.T subject also almost all  students in city have Android phones today so access to blog and email is available to them , in almost all newspaper's we can find film review's there are some professional review writer's not only for film's but for hotel's , restaurant's and many such services so including this topic will be helpful to student's as this skill can be transformed into a profession , but if we are looking at all students as a whole I feel some topics will be difficult for rural student's but I do feel inclusion of this topics will be helpful to students

Prof. Atul Ingle
[7:41 PM, 10/07/2019]:
Definitely dear Tushar sir & congratulations as ur views have been considered.
All the new topics are need of an hour.
The present and upcoming generation is techno savvy.
Blog writing is definitely a very appreciative move by the BOS.
The art of comparing, review of a film are really challenging topics not only for the students but also for we teachers.
Email writing is also essential topic.
Expansion of ideas is new topic for state board.
All these topics are really tougher for Arts students.
We need to take extra efforts for such poor-n-needy students.
Even we still don't know about new paper pattern.
How these 100 marks have been divided?
Once it is clear, Arts students will get exact idea of how to score at least passing marks with these challenging topics. Availability of QR code is praiseworthy.

Prof. Hanuman Lohar
[7:55 PM, 7/10/2019]:
Yes sir ....we r ready for the new.  Is it 80+20 or 100.... Is the same question pattern except writing skill or different... Plz guide .
Resp all, let's positively welcome the new course book for std 11th n be consistently determined n devoted towards our role in uplifting the standard of English as an effective communication tool for our rural students 😊👍

 Prof. Atul Ingle
[9:09 PM, 10/07/2019]:
From this academic year onwards there is no oral exam for +2 students. The activity sheet pattern will be of 100 marks.
The distribution of these 100 marks is not clear till date.

Prof. Manisha Deshmukh
 [9:21 PM, 10/07/2019] :
I think, language is expressed by speaking skill, so there must be 80+20 pattern.

Prof. Tushar Chavan
[9:26 PM, 10/07/2019]:
One committee is set for deciding the evaluation pattern for Std ninth to 12th. We have to wait for decision of the committee. If it decide to include internal marks, there will be oral exam again.

Prof. Tushar Chavan
[10:13 PM, 10/07/2019]:
Compering - Host of the program.
This is a new concept. We see many TV programs having one or two persons hosting the program. They introduce the guests, contestants, rules and regulations. They make the program enjoyable. It is nice career option for our students.
But how to introduce it to our students is a big issue. We have to set steps for it.
What should we do? Give your ideas.

Prof. Mangesh Shelke
[6:02 AM, 10/07/2019]:
I agree with your opinion. I think rural student should be considered specially arts student.

 Prof. Amardeep Mahajan
[9:26 AM, 11/07/2019]:
Excellent inputs Resp Sir n I am happy going through the contents 😊👍
I feel we must accept the challenge of upraising the awareness of the students n their approach towards the changed contents rather than increasing the phobia of English 😀

Prof. Hanuman Lohar
 [2:30 PM, 11/07/2019]:
All the respected professors we have accepted all texts for 11 th because it hasn't options. I think whatever we are saying it may be considered in xii text book .....🙏🏼🚩

Jr. College Eng. Teachers’ Group 2

Prof.Vijay Pawar Vile Parle Mumbai
[9:23 PM, 10/07/2019]:
Overall it looks pretty good but some of the topics are lengthy enough to stretch till 13 to 14 pages.
It will be complementary to cbse icse students as they are already learning literature till class X. But for ssc board students, who have so little touch with literature, it may a bit difficult to digest.

Prof.Pallavi Patil Ainapur Raver
 [9:25 PM, 10/07/2019]:
They reduced the number of lessons but so lengthy lessons

 Prof. Adv Abhiman Patil
[9:49 PM, 10/07/2019]:
There is a drastic change in the construction of English Yuvakbharti text book of XIth std.
It's a pragmatic textbook. All significant and useful topics including email, blog, film review etc are included. In a real sense, now, sutdents will enjoy the taste of literature. It's true that some topics are lengthy but units and lessons are reduced.

Prof. Kashinath Patil
[10:08 PM, 10/07/2019]:
In the present Activity Sheet pattern there's no provision for newly included topics ... Such as ...
Film Review
Expansion of Ideas
Blog Writing
E mails
Therefore a new pattern is the need of the time.

Prof.  Mahesh Lahoti
[10:28 PM, 10/07/2019]:
Giving an opportunity through the college programme like Welcome Programme for 11th std, the Teachers Day, taking a small interview of a businessman of our own town to interact them towards the role of a "Host"...

 Prof. Ajay Todkari sir Barshi
[10:38 PM, 10/07/2019]:
We should create situations of taking programme and ask students to play the role of host. We should show some demos first. We should provide them points.

Prof. Sajjad Ahmad Khan Patur Akola
[4:14 PM, 11/07/2019]
Today I purchased Std XI English Course book in a book stall in the local market. From its outward appearance, it has an attention-grabbing look, it’s beautiful, handy, easy to carry and of course, an eye-pleasing one.
I like the way you all enjoying this new question in our curriculum. Sujata Ali mam nicely elaborate it but I think as per the students point of view  activities should be given on it like Name of Director 'Actor ,Actress , Characters, plot, setting ,Music, Story ,Screen play ,dialogue ,etc . Write review on any movie you like most . In our text book model film reviews are given like Jungle book  .If browse the text you will find the film is popular meaningful and haven't raise any controversial issue or the movie is not a murder mystery or having UA certificate .So selective approach should be given here . Is it blockbuster moviee ?  hollywood , bollywood or regional movie ? Do school college  show moviee to the students ?Their will  be a lot controversy  on this question in near future May be it is an optional question too.Being examination we have to evaluate activity sheet on the basis of language.

Prof. Manisha Shrivastava
[6:00 PM, 10/07/2019]:
Really an innovative and refreshing change. Kudos to the course designers... Now writing skill will be creative too....
Have worked with the students on movie review and compering as fun activities... Now will be doing within the curriculum....interesting....

Prof. Umesh Mendhe, Gondiya
[10:26 PM, 10/07/2019]:
I think comparing is interesting & challenging task for students. In my jr college I have environment Education periods. Every Saturday I conduct seminars on different topics related to 5environment. I have made group of 6,7 students. Students themselves prepare topic in English & present in front of students. Group leader compare the whole team. Such activity can develop the skill of comparing 👍
Students themselves adopt innovative ideas to make seminar intereting👍We are only motivators🙏

It is nice book after seeing contents ... Poetry part is very lavish with the greatest English poets...Prose is compiled with great thought...In writing some parts are new to the students and some are useful...I think we have to use Diksha app while teaching...

 Prof. Sujata Ali, Nagpur

I was awaiting for a text book containing a real justice with the study of English literature and its contents from last ten years. I am personally pleased by the newly formed text book of FYJC which will allow me give a touch of literary figures like Shakeshpeare, Wordsworth, Ruskin Bond, E. Dickenson, W. Cowper, Ibsen and the greatest B.R.Ambedkar.
There was a need of formation in writing skill which is fulfilled. Its  really practical and useful.

Prof. Aarifa J Amin Khan, Jalgaon
[8:15 PM, 10/07/2019]:
First of all, I congratulate the board of study for creating such a nice book. If talking about content, it's short, sweet and innovative. Part third and fourth are really praiseworthy. New writing skills are really good for updating our students and also make our teaching learning process more interesting. The book is also a gift for the lover of literature, satisfying our aesthetic sense. I think if our board of study include some topics related to fun and interaction (communication), the book is more useful. 👍

 Prof. Madhu Madam
[9:13 PM, 10/07/2019]:
Prescribed text is really interesting to teach.

 Prof. Sujata Ali, Nagpur
[10:48 PM, 10/07/2019]:
Kabir Singh : The title of the movie itself tells you that the entire story from start to finish revolves around the central character of the story namely Kabir Singh.   He is a fourth year medical student with an extremely short fuse waiting to pick up a fight at the drop of a hat. He falls head over heels in love with a first year medical student, namely Priti who is shown as a really timid creature following Kabir like a puppy at his heels. I wonder if Delhi Medical College really allows senior students to flout all rules as depicted in the movie. Kabir Singh is shown to be literally living in the college with his girlfriend in the boys hostel. Anyways, he graduates then leaves campus to do his masters becomes a surgeon and returns back to marry his sweet…

Does anybody know about the fate of oral exam for STD XI from 2019- 20?

Prof. Tushar Chavan
[6:32 AM, 11/07/2019]:
We have to wait for decision of the committee.

Prof.Sujata Ali, Nagpur
[7:33 AM, 11/07/2019]: Article 15 is Director Anubhav Sinha’s attempt to show a mirror to the society. What was written in our constitution about equality and what we follow is chalk and cheese. This movie focuses on an aspect of castesim which we see around us every day but still it goes unnoticed. Article 15 is about discrimination.
Discriminating behavior is ingrained in our behaviour to an extent where we practice it every day and not realize it. How many of us allow our maids to sit on our sofas or to drink water from the same cup that we drink. How many Dhobis come to collect clothes and sit on the floor? And how many of us find this completely normal and common place?
We the urban lot only understand discrimination in the form of reservation, but can you fathom the tho…

Prof.Sujata Ali, Nagpur
[7:42 AM, 11/07/2019]:
RAID. Well. What shall I say. I went to watch the movie with a lot of expectations. It's all about a raid carried out by a team of IT officials who end up digging out a mountain of wealth from the house of an MP.  So what's New????   We all know that practically every politician has this kind of unaccounted wealth with them. The movie is more like a documentary rather than a film with a strong story line. There are a lot of pauses and at times you get the feeling as if nothing is happening to make it move forward. It's too real too dark and too predictable. I would give it a single star.

Prof.Sujata Ali, Nagpur
[7:45 AM, 11/07/2019]:
Badhai Ho. It's a simple movie with a simple theme. The entire story revolves around a middle class family with an extraordinary situation they are placed in. How they react to it is what the movie is all about. Aayushman Khurana and the entire team have given a stellar performance. The family shares a strong bond and the adjustments and sacrifices made by middle class women is beautifully portrayed. The importance of caring, loving and feeling of oneness in a society which is fast losing its customs, culture and traditions is also highlighted in the movie. Music lovers will be disappointed as there isn't a single song to hold your interest. Do not go to watch it with too much expectations cause that might dull the effect. A one time watch. I would give it 3…

Madam , for film review whether Particular points  would be given or not?
I think there should be points for proper presentation. 🙏🏻

Prof. Tushar Chavan
[3:00 PM, 11/07/2019]:
Yes. We have to set few specific points to write a review. It will help our students.

Prof. Sujata Ali, Nagpur
[3:01 PM, 11/07/2019]:
Definitely. I assume all that will be clarified in the first teacher training meet.

Prof. Tushar Chavan
[3:04 PM, 11/07/2019]:
Is training session organized or shall we see it's You tube videos?

Prof. Sujata Ali, Nagpur
[3:05 PM, 11/07/2019]:
I'm sure there will a training session sometime in August.

Prof Chopade Sir, Dombivali

As a literature critic and an iconic profession member,  I think the movie enlightens us to teach students(future of India ) the profound impacts of practicing caste system.
We, the Indians were enslaved by British and others because of this system.
National integrity, social harmony and rights of human being are destroyed because of this system.  If to maintain independence forever, we must tell people around us ' NO DISCRIMINATION  PLEASE ,  SAVE HUMANITY and SAVE COUNTRY'

Sir as per my opinion film review is not proper question. Because students don't have proper idea which films review they have to write. If I don't see the film how I can write review. In rural areas students don't have sources to watch the movies. Otherwise we need to include the movies in our syllabus.

[3:45 PM, 7/11/2019] Sujata Ali, Nagpur: Okay. You are giving your personal opinion here. Right???

Prof.Sujata Ali, Nagpur

Everyone watches movies nowadays. Besides it's simply a technique where you need to give your review about a movie. It can be any movie
[3:47 PM, 7/11/2019] Sujata Ali, Nagpur: And I'm certain the questions framed in the exam will leave it upon the students to decide which movie review they wish to write
And anyways it's too early to debate on the issue. Let us wait till we meet at the first teacher training session

Friends, why are you so worried about film reviews? Let us know about the model Q P and then we can discuss.

Prof. Sajjad Ahmad Khan Patur Akola
[4:13 PM, 11/07/2019] :

I like the way you all enjoying this new question in our curriculum.Sujata Ali mam nicely elaborate it but I think as per the students point of view  activities should be given on it like Name of Director 'Actor ,Actress , Characters, plot, setting ,Music, Story ,Screen play ,dialogue ,etc . Do school college  show movie to the students ?Their will  be a lot controversy  on this question in near future May be it is an optional question too. Being examination we have to evaluate activity sheet on the basis of language.
