Teaching a Poem-

Teaching a poem in the class is a challenging thing. See various views and ideas shared by different teachers about how to teach a poem in the class room.

कवितेचे अध्यापन कसे करावे या विषयी चे विविध शिक्षकांनी व्यक्त केलेले विचार पहा.

Click below to see the views-

If I am teaching a poem how would I go?

Poem is for enjoyment and learning also. It is meant for beauty and adds the feelings of interest. The students enjoy the beauty of the poem for the longer period of time. We teachers might be remembering some of the beautiful poems we learnt long back. The credit of this goes to our teachers and also our active participation in the classroom teaching.

Let's decide teaching steps for maximum learning of a poem.

1. The teacher should introduce the title and tell its meaning. The students should be attracted to go through the poem.

2. The teacher should read the poem with proper pronunciation, intonation and stress.

3. He should ask the students to read it loudly. May be one or two students to increase students' confidence. The teacher would ask them for silent  reading for comprehension.

4. The teacher would introduce difficult words, some time give hints and let the students learn freely at their own.

5.The teacher may  tell the summary in simple possible words or ask the students to tell the contents by asking simple  questions.

6.The teacher should take each activity one by one according to the format. The teacher should help them to discover the answers.

7.One important thing is the teacher should give clues, key points etc. to make the students feel that they are able answer at their own.

This sort of feeling of the students makes their learning easy. The overall participation of students make the learning easy.

I feel that teaching a poem is not a child's play. The teacher must have a poetic bent of mind in order to give justice. He must creat poetic atmosphere in the classroom. He must give paraphrase of the poem n explain the poem with its difficult words n phrases n poetic devices after reading it with rhythm. He must inspire his students to enjoy the beauty of the poem.

Absolutely agreed with steps which given by various teachers here while teaching poetry , but I want to draw attention on something which is here-

1)  Poetry is like a document which never has a perfect(one)  meaning ..While you go through it again and again we may found various layers ..We must explain the society, situation, contemporary problems etc .

2) For understanding poem we must try to - Reading between the lines-Poet never said what he actually written !!

3 ) There is one proverb that we can't swim in the same river twice . We find new meaning by every reading , then there may be criticism ,What kind of society,Mood of poet ,All this things also be considered while teaching ..Rather then this we have our traditional ways of teaching which are helpful for students.

Considering the above steps given by the teachers while teaching a poem in the class, giving them satisfaction it it is well prepared  with proper steps. Title, aim, new words and their meanings, presentation of the poem, poetic devices, participation of the students, presentation of different activities.

For more result to do-

1)Increase the interest of the students in the learning and make them ready to respond for the exam.

2)develop the above steps for the teaching.

3)give the hints /clues for better understanding

4)let them understand the theme

5)let them understand the different activities.

6)provide study material to respond with the format of question paper.

7)prepare workbook for additional practice.

8)give them practice through workbook.

Proper explanation of each line is expected with hidden meanings, ideas, tone, tenor of the poet.

Overall meaning of the stanza and the poem should be explained in the class.

Figures of speech explanation and to figure out the meanings of difficult ideas of the poet is also needed. While doing this interaction with students should go on. Only after doing all these things, students feel or say the teacher teaches.

If we follow standard methodology of teaching poem then students make complaints about teaching. We have to balance our teachings with administration. There isn't any solution for this practical life teaching. Some may agree or disagree, but none can escape from the reality.

Everyone tries to use exam oriented technique to increase the results of the institution. There may be exceptions.

Teaching poetry is a challenge for us. I use the following steps-

Tell about the title.

Introduce the poet. Tell about his work with contemporary writers. His typical characteristics.

Discuss about the poetic devices used in the poem.

Read out the poem loudly. We usually use recorded recitation or ask some students to read out for the class.

Explain different words, phrases, language used in the poem.

Tell the story in short.

Ask students to read the poem using rhyme and rhythm.

Deal with the activities.

Try to evoke their creativity with brainstorming...How I teach poem in my class?(techniques I apply)

1. If technology supports I ask the students to listen the audio clip of poem. Otherwise taking the turns students read aloud the poem with rhythm.

2. While reading aloud those who are listening pick up the unknown words, phrases, expressions.

3. In groups all together the class guess the meaning of the unknown words/phrases.4. Students try to explain the title with the help of me. I facilitate where need.

5. Afterwards stanza wise we all together discuss on the theme, what does the poet intend to say? Why? If this happens in our life or in our surroundings how can we deal with such circumstances?

6. Summary of the poem.

7.Use of figures of speech, literally devices

8. Agree/disagree session:

a. Important lines from the poem

b. Views of the poet.

I think, (regarding poetry section)

1. We must create a proper atmosphere for the subject of poetry.

2. We must discuss the title so that students should be able to guess the meaning of the lines of poem.

3. Ask the students to read the poem carefully to understand.

4. Ask the students to guess the meanings of the new words.

5. Explain the poem in short.

6. Ask the students to guess the message, theme of the poem etc.

7. Discuss poetic devices and doubts and difficulties of the poem.

To increase the students Activities we should start the question from factual questions to discuss. Like true or False, fill in the blanks, fill the table, web diagram, match the pair etc.  Teacher should convert most of the questions into this format. It may help to everyone to understand the poem or text properly. Then turn to Inference and personal response which some time achieved only by a student having own concept and power to transform idea into English.

Explaining the poem line by line takes away the realistic beauty of the poem. The teacher can discuss about the title and try to get response for this from the students and then the poem should be ready aloud in the class and the overall gist of the poem can be discussed. Later on we can take up the poetic devices followed by activities and finally the poetic creativity for this we can have a discussion with students as what theme based on the poem can be done for creativity.

These are the steps generally followed by majority of the teachers. While teaching poetry or prose I explain grammatical items, literary device in the due course of explaining a stanza or an extract. Even, the activities based on a particular topic are taken at the same time.

I follow the following steps-

1) Discussion on Title

2) Ice breakers

3) Information of poet

4) Reading of the poem

5) New words and their meaning

6) Paraphrase

7) Figures of speech with explanation

8) Special features

9) Solving Activity sheet

Award winning video based on Indian Weavers-

Key points of all the Poems-

1) Song of the Open Road

The speaker of the poem is describing a trip which he starts. He describes himself as being “healthy and free,” and he realizes he is the only person who is in complete control of his life. He decides his own destiny. He neglects the troubles of life and enjoys life.

कवी सुरू झालेल्या प्रवासाचे वर्णन करतो. तो स्वतःचे "निरोगी आणि मुक्त" असे वर्णन करतो आणि त्याला जाणवते की तो एकमेव व्यक्ती आहे जो स्वत:च्या जीवनावर पूर्ण नियंत्रण ठेवतो. तो स्वतःचे नशीब घडवतो. तो जीवनातील त्रासांकडे दुर्लक्ष करून जीवनाचा आनंद घेतो.

2) Indian Weavers

Sarojini Naidu's poem "Indian Weavers" uses the metaphor of weaving to describe the three stages of human life: birth, marriage, and death. The poem uses symbolic imagery and figures of speech to present the journey of life from birth to death. The different colors and times of day symbolize different occasions and stages of life.

3) The Inchcape Rock

‘The Inchcape Rock’ by Robert Southey narrates the story of Sir Ralph the Rover. He was a reckless and selfish pirate. He cut off the warning bell from the Inchcape Rock. He felt jealous of Abbot because he placed the warning bell on the Inchcape rock, and everyone blessed him. He took out the warning bell from the Inchcape rock.

However, as Sir Ralph sets sail after his malicious act, he and his crew encounter challenging conditions, including a thick haze, strong swell, and loss of visibility. In a moment of poetic justice, they strike the very rock Sir Ralph had tampered with, leading to their ship’s sinking. In his dying moments, Sir Ralph hears a sound resembling the Inchcape Bell, signaling his reckoning.

4) Have You Earned Your Tomorrow

The inspirational poem ‘Have You Earned Your Tomorrow’ is written by the famous poet Edgar Guest. The poem beautifully explains the poet's thoughts and vision. The theme of the poem is believing in karma. The poet advises us to do good today and we would receive the same goodness the following day or in future. A reader will immediately notice upon beginning ‘Have You Earned Your Tomorrow’ that the text is marked by questions directed at the reader.

"Have You Earned Your Tomorrow" ही प्रेरणादायी कविता प्रसिद्ध कवी एडगर गेस्ट यांनी लिहिली आहे. कविता कवीचे विचार आणि दृष्टी सुंदरपणे स्पष्ट करते. कवितेचा मध्यवर्ती कल्पना कर्मावर विश्वास ठेवणे आहे. कवी आपल्याला आज चांगले करण्याचा सल्ला देतो आणि तोच चांगुलपणा आपल्याला दुसऱ्या दिवशी किंवा भविष्यात प्राप्त होईल. कवितेत विचारलेले प्रश्न वाचकाला जागृत करणे आहे.

5) Father Returning Home

‘Father Returning Home’ by Dilip Chitre is a poem about the alienation and isolation that elderly people experience in modern cities. The poem uses various details to create a clear atmosphere that reflects the father's weariness and lack of human connection.

दिलीप चित्रे यांची ‘फादर रिटर्निंग होम’ ही आधुनिक शहरांमध्ये वृद्ध लोक अनुभवत असलेल्या परकेपणा आणि एकाकीपणा या विषयीची कविता आहे. कविता विविध प्रसंग दाखवते ज्यातून वडिलांचा थकवा आणि मानवी संबंधाचा अभाव दिसतो.

6) Money

‘Money‘ by W.H Davies is intended to give a warning that having money does not give any guaranty to bring happiness. In the poem, the narrator informs that he was only able to experience true joy in his life when he lost all of his money. Money attracts a lot of fake friends. People who want to be in your life regardless of how much money you have are worth more than any riches. The poem encourages the reader to appreciate the genuine relationships they have in their life, neglecting money.

7) She Walks in Beauty

The poem ‘She Walks in Beauty’ praises a woman’s beauty. More specifically, it presents that beauty as a kind of harmony that is as perfect as it is rare. This particular woman’s beauty is practically unparalleled because of the exquisite harmony and visual balance of her looks. Beauty, the poem thus suggests, is perfection achieved through harmony.

8) Small Towns and Rivers

‘Small Towns and The River’ is a poem about life and mortality. The town symbolizing death presents a weeping picture of those who have lost their dear ones. In this poem, not only the poet grieves but the town also mourns the loss. Moreover, the poet presents a contrast in the image of the river that lives eternally whereas, humans are prone to death and decay.

How to Write Std 12 Poetic Appreciation

How to Write Std 12 Poetic Appreciation

Class XII Poetic Appreciation- How to remember it.

Poetic Appreciation- Know more about it

Poetic appreciation is the act of recognizing, understanding, and valuing the beauty, depth, and emotional resonance of poetry. It involves delving into the intricate layers of language, symbolism, imagery, and rhythm that poets employ to convey their thoughts and emotions.

Here are some reasons why poetic appreciation is important:

1) Cultural Preservation: Poetry is often deeply intertwined with the culture, history, and traditions of a society. By appreciating poetry, individuals contribute to the preservation of their cultural heritage and ensure that important ideas and values are passed down through generations.

कविता ही बहुधा समाजाची संस्कृती, इतिहास आणि परंपरा यांच्याशी खोलवर गुंफलेली असते. कवितेचे रसग्रहण करून, व्यक्ती त्यांच्या सांस्कृतिक वारशाचे जतन करण्यासाठी योगदान देतात आणि महत्त्वाच्या कल्पना आणि मूल्ये पिढ्यांपिढ्या हस्तांतरित होतील याची खात्री करतात.

2) Emotional Insight: Poetry has a unique ability to evoke and express complex emotions in a succinct and powerful manner. By appreciating poetry, individuals can gain insight into their own emotions and experiences, as well as the experiences of others, fostering empathy and understanding.

कवितेमध्ये जटिल भावना जागृत करण्याची आणि संक्षिप्त आणि शक्तिशाली पद्धतीने व्यक्त करण्याची अद्वितीय क्षमता असते. कवितेचे रसग्रहण करून, व्यक्ती त्यांच्या स्वतःच्या भावना आणि अनुभव तसेच इतरांच्या अनुभवांबद्दल सहानुभूती आणि समजूतदारपणा वाढवू शकतात.

3) Critical Thinking: Analyzing and interpreting poetry requires critical thinking skills, such as the ability to identify patterns, make connections, and draw conclusions. Poetic appreciation encourages individuals to engage deeply with language and ideas, honing their analytical skills in the process.

कवितेचे विश्लेषण आणि अर्थ लावण्यासाठी आलोचनात्मक विचार कौशल्ये आवश्यक असतात. काव्यात्मक प्रशंसा व्यक्तींना भाषेत आणि कल्पनांमध्ये सखोलपणे गुंतण्यासाठी प्रोत्साहित करते.

4) Creativity and Expression: Poetic appreciation nurtures creativity by exposing individuals to different styles, forms, and techniques of writing. It encourages them to experiment with language and imagery in their own writing, fostering self-expression and artistic growth.

काव्यात्मक प्रशंसा व्यक्तींना वेगवेगळ्या शैली, फॉर्म आणि लेखनाच्या तंत्रांसमोर आणून सर्जनशीलतेचे पोषण करते. हे त्यांना त्यांच्या स्वत: च्या लेखनात भाषा आणि प्रतिमा वापरण्यासाठी, आत्म-अभिव्यक्ती आणि कलात्मक वाढीस प्रोत्साहन देते.

5) Connection and Communication: Poetry often addresses universal themes and experiences that resonate across cultures and time periods. By appreciating poetry, individuals can connect with others who share similar thoughts and feelings, fostering a sense of community and belonging.

कविता सहसा सार्वभौमिक थीम आणि अनुभवांना संबोधित करते जे संस्कृती आणि कालखंडात प्रतिध्वनी करतात. कवितेचे रसग्रहण करून, व्यक्ती समान विचार आणि भावना सामायिक करणाऱ्या इतरांशी संपर्क साधू शकतात तसेच अन्य समुदायाशी आपलेपणाची भावना वाढवू शकतात.

In summary, poetic appreciation is important for its role in cultural preservation, emotional insight, critical thinking, creativity, connection, aesthetic enjoyment, and healing. By engaging with poetry, individuals can enrich their lives and deepen their understanding of themselves and the world around them.
