Q. 1. (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below: (12) [16]

               This is what Camus meant when he said that “what gives value to travel is fear”-  disruption, in other words, (or emancipation) from circumstance, and all the habits behind which we hide. And that is why many of us travel not in search of answers, but of better questions. I, like many people, tend to ask questions of the places I visit, and relish most the ones that ask the most searching questions back of me: “The ideal travel book,” Christopher Isherwood once said, “should be perhaps a little like a crime story in which you’re in search of something.” And it’s the best kind of something, I would add, if it’s one that you can never quite find.

I remember, in fact, after my first trips to Southeast Asia, more than a decade ago, how I would come back to my apartment in New York, and lie in my bed, kept up by something more than jet lag, playing back, in my memory, over and over, all that I had experienced, and paging wistfully though my photographs and reading and re-reading my diaries, as if to extract some mystery from them. Anyone witnessing this strange scene would have drawn the right conclusion: I was in love.

When we go abroad is that we are objects of scrutiny as much as the people we scrutinize, and we are being consumed by the cultures we consume, as much on the road as when we are at home. At the very least, we are objects of speculation (and even desire) who can seem as exotic to the people around us as they do to us.

All, in that sense, believed in “being moved” as one of the points of taking trips, and “being transported” by private as well as public means; all saw that “ecstasy” (“ex-stasis”) tells us that our highest moments come when we’re not stationary, and that epiphany can follow movement as much as it precipitates it.

(b) One gets inspected as he inspects the world around him.

(c) Quest for something may end in more mystery.

How to Prepare for HSC Board Exam (Coming Soon)

Love is a great force in private life; it is indeed the greatest of all things, but love in public affairs does not work. It has been tried again and again; by the people of the Middle Ages, and also by the French Revolution, a secular movement which reasserted the Brotherhood of Man. And it has always failed. The idea that nations should love one another, or that business concerns or marketing boards should love one another or that a man in Portugal should love a man in Peru of whom he has never heard - it is absurd, unreal, dangerous. 'Love is what is needed,' we chant, and then sit back and the world goes on as before. The fact is we can only love what we know personally. And we cannot know much. In public affairs, in the rebuilding of civilization, something much less dramatic and emotional is needed, namely tolerance. Tolerance is a very dull virtue. It is boring. It is negative. It merely means putting up with people, being able to stand things. No one has ever written an ode to tolerance, or raised a statute to her. Yet this is the quality which will be most needed after the war. This is the sound state of mind which we are looking for. This is the only force which will enable different races and classes and interests to settle down together to the work of reconstruction.

The world is very full of people appallingly full; it has never been so full before, and they are all tumbling over each other. Most of these people one doesn't know and some of them one doesn't like. Well, what is one to do? If you don't like people, put up with them as well as you can. Don't try to love them, you can't. But try to tolerate them. On the basis of that tolerance a civilized future may be built. Certainly, I can see no other foundation for the post-war world.

(i) Love is a greater force in private as well as in public affairs.

(ii) To rebuild civilization, we need tolerance more than love.

(iii) Patience is the solution in any sort of confrontation.

(iv) When you do not like people, nations or civilizations, you need to love them to change them.

(ii) To rebuild civilization, we need tolerance more than love.

(iii) Patience is the solution in any sort of confrontation.

Give one merit and one demerit of 'Love' and 'Patience.'

Love(i) ------------- (ii) -------------
Patience(i) ------------- (ii) -------------
Love(i) Merit: Grate force in private life
(ii) Demerit: Love in public affairs is ineffective /Love does not work in public matters.
Patience (Tolerance)(i) Merit: A force which helps in rebulding civilization
(ii) Demerit: Dull, boring and negative virtue

To build up a civilised future, we need to have tolerance in public affairs because this is the very virtue that would make people create an understanding and considerate society. Tolerance would function as a pacifier in the roaring world and make it civilised.

It’s true that 'Love and tolerance are the true indicators of a civilized person.' Without love we can’t build good relationships. It is a great force to develop greatest things. In the same way, tolerance helps us to deal with other unknown persons with peace and proper ways. It builds healthy relationships between different races and classes.

(Identify the correct Active Voice of the above sentence from the given options and rewrite.)

(a) They had tried it again and again.

(b) They has tried it again and again.

(c) They tried it again and again.

(d) They have tried it again and again.

(d) They have tried it again and again.

(Identify the correct simple sentence from the given options and rewrite.)

(a) It is the sound state of mind, and we are looking for it.

(b) We are looking for the sound state of mind.

(c) We are looking for it but it is the sound state of mind.

(d) The sound state of mind is looked for.

(b) We are looking for the sound state of mind.

Column 'A'Column 'B'
(i) Secular(a) feeling of great friendship and understanding between people.
(ii) Absurd(b) a society which has its own highly developed culture and ways of life.
(iii) Civilization(c) not connected with any religion.
(iv) Brotherhood(d) not at all logical or sensible.
Column 'A'Column 'B'
(i) Secular(c) not connected with any religion.
(ii) Absurd(d) not at all logical or sensible.
(iii) Civilization(b) a society which has its own highly developed culture and ways of life.
(iv) Brotherhood(a) feeling of great friendship and understanding between people.

Write a 'summary' of the above extract by using the following points.

(Love as a force ----- its limitations------ tolerance ----need of tolerance

Title: Importance of Love and Tolerance

Love and tolerance are the important forces to develop sound relationships after post war. Love is greatest of all things in private matters while tolerance is the main instrument to rebuild civilization. We can love what we know personally so in common area it is not usful. Here we have to use tolerance. So love and tolerance can help to build a civilized society. Both are the important foundation of civilized world.

SECTION - II: POETRY

(Poetry and Appreciation)

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!

(a) The poet is blunt and direct in his expression of love.

(b) Internal beauty is as important as the external beauty.

(c) The poet is in love with lady's outward beauty.

(d) Beauty lies in the eyes of beholder.

(b) Internal beauty is as important as the external beauty.

(d) Beauty lies in the eyes of beholder.

her hair---------- her eyes----------
 Lady’s beauty – a cloudless starry night
Her mind---------- her smile----------
her hair- raven, wavy, black, long hair her eyes- a perfect blend of light and darkness, (bright and dark)
 Lady’s beauty – a cloudless starry night
her mind- at peace with all below a heart her smile- winning, soft, calm and eloquent

According to me, a beautiful person is one whose mind and heart are soft and kind. The person who spreads love and compassion to all has the real beauty. The outer beauty is enhanced by the sensitive and sweet nature of such person.

Examples of ‘Antithesis’

i) And all that’s best of dark and bright.

Explanation: The opposite ideas – dark and bright – are used.

ii) One shade the more, one ray the less.

Explanation: The opposite ideas – more and less – are used.

I see beauty in musicians’ hands.
They are making songs for many bands.
I consider their toil as beauty of nature.
As they are building their family’s future.

(B) Appreciation:(4)

Read the extract and write the appreciation of the poem.(4)

They hear no sound, the swell is strong,
Though the wind hath fallen they drift along;
Till the vessel strikes with a shivering shock,
“Oh Christ! It is the Inchcape Rock!”

Sir Ralph the Rover tore his hair,
He curst himself in his despair;
The waves rush in on every side,
The ship is sinking beneath the tide.

But even is his dying fear,
One dreadful sound could the Rover hear;
A sound as if with the Inchcape Bell,
The Devil below was ringing his knell.

About Poem and poet: The poem ‘The Inchcape Rock’ is written by the Poet Laureate of England Robert Southey. Some of his short poems are  very popular with  the school children. The poem describes jealousy and its harsh impact.

Title of the poem: The poem ‘The Inchcape Rock’ has taken as its title the name of the legendary rock which is the centre of all the events.

Theme: If you do bad things to people, bad things will happen to you

Poetic Device: The Inchcape Rock is written in the form of a ballad. Figures of speech like alliteration, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia and repetition are used here. As the poem was written in 18th century, it is rich with symbol, imagery and archaism. The rhyme scheme used in the poem is ‘a a b b’.

Message of the poem: The poem gives us a message that those who do wrong things will meet with due punishment.

My opinion about the poem: I like the poem very much as it contains a good moral story.

(C) Attempt 'Any One' of the following activities: (4)

(i) Imagine you are preparing for an elocution competition and you wish to speak on the topic 'Green Revolution." Draft a speech in about 150 words on the given topic.

Topic:- Green Revolution.

Good morning, everyone. Honourable chairperson, respected judges, respected teachers, and my dear friends! As a participant of this  elocution competition, I would like to speak on the topic,’ Green Revolution'.

Friends!  You might have heard the words like Industrial Revolution, Political Revolution, White Revolution and Green Revolution. What is Revolution? Yes, it means  a great change often as a result of progress. And what is the Green Revolution? Right. Green Revolution means the change in agriculture. It is associated with agricultural production. It resulted in increased production of food grains.(Especially, wheat and rice)

Well, friends, can you tell me the name of a person who used the term Green Revolution, first? Yes, it was used by William S. Gaud from the U.S. While Norman Borlaug is called the father of Green  Revolution in the world.

Friends, I think, you know the father of Indian Green Revolution. Correct. Monkomb Sambasivan Swaminathan (M. S. Swaminathan).

Friends, we all know that our country is an agricultural country .In the past, farming  was being done in a traditional manner i.e. ploughing, cultivating ,harvesting  were done manually. Our Indian agriculture depends on the monsoon. There is no guarantee of rain. So, there is no guarantee of yielding. That's why Indian agriculture is called the gamble on monsoon. Most of the people died of famine.

But now the situation is quite different. Most of the work of farming is being done with the help of machines like tractors, harvesters, Cultivators and so on. There are many hybrid seeds that give more yielding. Green Revolution increased the availability and use of fertilizers, weedicides, pesticides, sprays to reduce the damage or loss of the crops.

Friends, everything has two sides, good and bad. Likewise, the Green Revolution also has two sides i.e.  advantages and disadvantages. Its benefits are, it reduces  greenhouse gas emission and it has helped to reduce the occurrence of famine and malnutrition. But it has some disadvantages such as soil degradation due to the use of pesticides, chemical fertilizers or irrigation, water pollution, health problems due to pesticides, increase mosquito borne disease, reduce ground water level etc.

Friends, on seeing the advantages and disadvantages, we come to know that disadvantages are much more than the advantages. Anyway, it's today's need. So, we should look at it positively as it increases the production of food grains to feed the increasing population.

Friends, I hope you understood the concept of Green Revolution. We have to change ourselves as per the  present situation. So, be positive, think positive.

Have a good day!

Thank you.

By,

Topic:- Green Revolution.

Honourable chief guest, respected teachers and my dear friends! Today I'm going to deliver a speech on the topic "Green Revolution". ‘Green revolution’ refers to a period of significant agricultural advancements that took place in the mid-20th century, primarily in the 1960s and 70s. It was a time when new technologies and farming practices were introduced to increase food production and address the global food crisis.

During this period, scientists and researchers developed and promoted high-yielding varieties of crops, such as wheat and rice. These new crop varieties were more resistant to diseases, pests, and environmental conditions, resulting in higher yields. Additionally, modern irrigation methods, like the use of sprinklers and drip irrigation, were implemented to ensure efficient water usage and maximize crop growth.

Chemical fertilizers also played a crucial role in the Green Revolution. They provided essential nutrients to the soil, boosting crop productivity. Farmers were encouraged to use these fertilizers to replenish soil nutrients and achieve better yields.

The Green Revolution had a profound impact on agriculture and food production. It helped to alleviate hunger, increase food security, and improve the livelihoods of millions of people around the world. By increasing crop yields, it made it possible to feed a growing global population.

However, it's important to note that the Green Revolution also had some negative consequences. The intensive use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides led to environmental concerns, such as soil degradation and water pollution. Additionally, the focus on high-yielding varieties led to a loss of crop diversity and a decline in traditional farming practices.

Overall, the Green Revolution was a significant turning point in agricultural history. It demonstrated the power of scientific advancements and innovation in addressing global food challenges. Today, we continue to build upon the achievements of the Green Revolution, striving for sustainable and environmentally friendly farming practices to ensure food security for future generations.

I conclude my speech, Thank you…!!

Topic:- Green Revolution.

Honourable Judges, teachers and my dear friends!

Today, I stand before you to shed light on the transformative phenomenon known as the Green Revolution. The Green Revolution, which unfolded in the mid-20th century, marked a crucial turning point in agriculture, spearheading innovations that significantly increased food production.

Characterized by the adoption of high-yielding crop varieties, advanced agricultural practices, and the widespread use of fertilizers and pesticides, the Green Revolution aimed to address the pressing issue of global food scarcity. The vision was clear: to enhance agricultural productivity and alleviate hunger on a global scale.

India experienced remarkable increase in crop yields. M.S. Swaminathan know as the father of Green Revolution was an architect and pioneer in the beginning of Green Revolution in India. Wheat, rice, and maize, among others, flourished, lifting millions out of poverty and ensuring a more secure food supply. The Green Revolution not only increased food production but also catalyzed economic growth in many developing nations.

However, it is crucial to acknowledge both the successes and challenges associated with this agricultural transformation. While the Green Revolution contributed to feeding a growing population, it also posed environmental concerns. Excessive use of chemical inputs led to soil degradation, water pollution, and a loss of biodiversity. This prompts us to reflect on the need for sustainable and environmentally friendly agricultural practices.

As we stand at the intersection of progress and environmental stewardship, it becomes imperative to forge a path forward that combines the lessons learned from the Green Revolution with a commitment to sustainable agriculture. Embracing technology, precision farming, and agroecological approaches can pave the way for a new green paradigm that not only ensures food security but also safeguards our planet for future generations.

In conclusion, the Green Revolution undeniably played a pivotal role in reshaping the landscape of global agriculture. Yet, as we navigate the challenges of the 21st century, let us strive for a new era of agricultural innovation—one that harmonizes productivity with environmental sustainability. Together, we can cultivate a greener and more resilient future for our planet.

Thank you.

Topic:- Green Revolution.

Respected judges, Principal, teachers and my competitors like shining stars in the sky. Very pleasant and warm good morning to one and all presented over here in the Brri. P.G. Patil Auditorium of KBP College, Vashi, Navi-mumbai.

Today, I stand before you to shed light on a pivotal moment in agricultural history - the Green Revolution. Born out of necessity to combat hunger and poverty, this movement transformed agriculture on a global scale.

The Green Revolution introduced high-yielding crop varieties, modern farming techniques, and increased the use of fertilizers and pesticides. Its impact was profound, significantly boosting food production and averting widespread famine.

However, as we celebrate its successes, we must also acknowledge its challenges. Environmental degradation, soil depletion, and dependence on chemical inputs pose significant threats to sustainability.

Therefore, as stewards of the earth, it is our responsibility to steer the Green Revolution towards a greener and more sustainable future. Embracing organic farming practices, promoting biodiversity, and harnessing technology for precision agriculture are crucial steps in this journey.

Let us pledge to honor the legacy of the Green Revolution by cultivating not just crops, but a harmonious relationship with nature. Together, let's sow the seeds of a greener tomorrow.
Thank you very much for your listening patiently.

Q.2. (A) Read the following extract and complete the activities given below: (12) [18]

          The government of India is encouraging medical tourism in the country by offering tax benefits and export incentives to the participating hospitals. Medical visas are being cleared quickly without any hassles. With a view to facilitating the growth of medical tourism industry, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare along with the Ministry of Tourism has set up a task force to evaluate the opportunities in the industry. Efforts are being made to standardise procedures and to guide foreign patients to select the hospitals most suited to their needs. Meanwhile, several private hospitals are seeking to take advantage of the booming medical tourism industry and are investing hugely in acquiring equipment and skills.

However, medical tourism carries some risks that locally provided medical care does not. Some countries like India, Malaysia and Thailand have very different infectious diseases rarely found in Europe and North America. Exposure to diseases without having built-up natural immunity can be a hazard for weak individuals specially with respect to gastrointestinal diseases like Hepatitis A, amoebic dysentery etc., which could slow down the recovery process. Also, medical tourists may be at risk from mosquito-transmitted diseases, influenza and tuberculosis. The quality of post- operative care can also vary dramatically depending on the hospital and the country. Finally, after returning home, a patient has a limited contact with their surgeon. This may make it difficult to deal with any complications that may arise later, such as a delayed infection.

The concept of medical tourism raises some important questions regarding accessibility, affordability and ethics in medical care. It is unfortunate that a large section of the Indian population has little or no access to private health care. Public health care system is inadequate and lacks proper infrastructure and facilities. One wonders if it is sensible to make provisions for medical tourism in a democratic country like India, which has failed to provide nourishment, sanitation and health care to its masses.

She walks in beauty, like the night
Of cloudless climes and starry skies;
And all that’s best of dark and bright
Meet in her aspect and her eyes;
Thus mellowed to that tender light
Which heaven to gaudy day denies.

One shade the more, one ray the less,
Had half impaired the nameless grace
Which waves in every raven tress,
Or softly lightens o’er her face;
Where thoughts serenely sweet express,
How pure, how dear their dwelling-place.

And on that cheek, and o’er that brow,
So soft, so calm, yet eloquent,
The smiles that win, the tints that glow,
But tell of days in goodness spent,
A mind at peace with all below,
A heart whose love is innocent!
