General Rules-

1) Do not write the underlined words in the question.

2) Make such question whose answer is the underlined words.

3) If the auxiliary verbs ‘do, does, did’ are used for making question, use the base form of main verbs in the question.

4) Write ‘wh-word’ in the beginning, interchange the subject and auxiliary verb.

e.g.

1) Seema decided to continue a diary.

Ans- What did Seema decide?

2) Sea water contains a lot of salt.

Ans- What does sea water contain?

3) They kill a cat.

Ans- What do they kill?

Use of Articles

Use of Articles

1) The Indefinite Articles :

A and an are called the indefinite articles. They are used only before the singular verbs.

Uses of article ‘a’:-

1) The article ‘a’ is used any countable singular noun.

e.g. a dog, a lion, a cat, a boy.

2) The singular noun which has the pronunciation like consonant, it takes the article ‘a’.

e.g. a university, a utility, a unicorn, a European, a unit, a universe, a one –legged doll.

3) The singular noun which shows the profession.

e.g. a farmer, a tailor, a doctor, a teacher

4) Before the singular noun which shows group.

e.g. an elephant is a clever animal.

A coconut tree is very useful.

5) Before the number words or number group words

e.g. a dozen, a century, a couple, a hundred rupees.

6) With vowel letters, having pronunciation like consonant.

e.g. a university, a unit, a utility, a European, a unicorn, a useful article, a one rupee note, a one man show.

Uses of article ‘an’

1) The article ‘an’ is used any countable singular noun.

e.g. an apple, an elephant, an orange, an ox.

2) The singular noun which has the pronunciation like vowel, it takes the article ‘an’. (Or With words beginning with vowel sounds.)

e.g. an egg, an elephant, an ink-bottle, an apple, an orange, an umbrella, an ass, an action, an ox, an idiot, an ultimatum, an egg.

3) The singular noun which begins with the consonant but has the pronunciation like vowel; it takes the article ‘an’. (Or words beginning with silent ‘h’.)

e.g. an hour, an honest man, an honour, an heir, an hotel, an historical novel, an M.A., an S.S.C., an M.P.

2) The Indefinite Article - the :

Uses of article ‘the’

1) To denote a particular person or thing or one already mentioned.

e.g. a) The chain you gave me is lost.

b) I bring a bag. The bag is really heavy.

c) We call a boy. The boy gives us information.

2) When a singular noun represents a whole class.

e.g. a) The king cobra is extremely poisonous.

b) The cow is a very useful animal.

c) The earthworm helps the farmers.

3) With superlatives.

e.g. a) He is the best student in our class.

b) This is the densest forest I have ever seen.

4) With names of rivers, seas, gulfs, group of islands, mountains and newspapers etc.

e.g. The Ganges, the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, the Persian gulf, the British Isles, the Alps, The Times of India, The Indian Express etc.

5) Before a proper noun only when it is qualified by an adjective.

e.g. The Immortal Shakespeare, The great Caesar, The great Maratha.

6) Before names of certain books.

e.g. The Ramayana, the Vedas, the Puranas, the Mahabharata.

7) Before the ordinals

e.g. The first, the second, the third etc.

8) To denote the side

e.g. The left, the right.

9)Before the word ‘same’.

e.g. The same book is here., the same student etc.

10) To give stress to the common name

e.g. This is the place where I want to get off.

This is the man who brings the news.

View –

It is the statement about any topic. It is also called debate for motion. Here all the supportive good points of the view statements are given.

Counter view –

It is the negative statement of the view topic. It is also called debate against motion. In counterview all the bad points of the view topic are given.

Q. Prepare a paragraph for a counterview section on the topic 'Sports should be optional in Colleges'.

Sports should be compulsory in Colleges

I do not agree with the above mentioned statement that 'sports should be optional in colleges'. Whether it is a school or a college, students have a lot to gain from sports. It removes stress from hard studies. It also keeps the students very active and fit. Sports help in inculcating many important qualities like team-work, determination, self-confidence, leadership, reasoning, endurance etc. that play an important role in the development of an individual's personality. Often, more emphasis on studies suppresses the need for sports in a student's life. Institutions should allot some time for sports for the benefit of the students. Young students are full of energy and it is vital to give way to their energy in the right direction. Also, providing a platform to raw talent would lead to the discovery of great sportspersons, who may bring honours to the nation in the near future. There should be proper time schedule for sports activities. Though academics success is important, heathy body and active personality is also essential. Sound mind stays in sound body. There is no problem of infrastructure as it is essential for each college to develop facilities for sports activities. Government is supporting sports by giving extra marks for achieving great success in competitions. Sports provides an overall learning experience for any individual, hence, it should be made compulsory in colleges.

Developing a counterview is a writing skill topic. It is expected to write its answer in about 120 words. The concept of debates and view/counter-view is similar. Here given thought is opposed by witty and strong arguments. It's a feast to brain.

View –

It is the affirmative statement about any topic. It is also called debate for motion. In view all the good points of the statements are given.

Counter view –

It is a negative statement about any topic. It is also called debate against motion. In counterview all the bad points of the topic are given.

Important hints :-

1) Include all relevant points.

2) Put points forcefully.

3) Provide data and statistics to prove points.

4) Give information but don’t preach.

5) Use easy language and correct sentences.

6) Do not offend any person.

7) Do not put forward any political, racial or irrelevant statement.

Prepare a paragraph to be used for the counter view section on the following topic.
‘Science is a curse to Human Beings’

‘Science is Blessing to Human Beings’
1. Science has helped man to make progress in many areas.
2. Science has given man many facilities.

Answer-

Counter View: Science is a curse to Human Beings

Science is called a blessing to human beings. But it is not real. In fact, science made man’s life so terrible that it should be called a curse to human beings.

Though science helped man in his progress, it also led man’s life in threat. Weapons like nuclear bomb, pistols, rifles, guns and other armaments become a hazard to human life. The facilities which science provides to man many times makes man idle and lazy. Science increases the speed of work but also results in loss of enjoyment and jobless workers.

The balance of Nature is overthrown by man with the help of science. There is an increase in various kinds of pollution and environmental problems due to science. Man lose his peace of mind and becoming a machine. The development in medicine also led to destruction of female babies before birth. Some medicines also have serious side effects. Seeing all these points it can be said that science is a curse to human being.

One should be extra ambitious in life

While some argue that one should not be extra ambitious in life gives dissatisfaction. But it’s not true. In fact, fulfillment of extra ambition gives extra joy. If we fail in our attempt, our extra ambition gives us energy to do more hard work. It is also said that excessive ambition can lead to stress and tension in life. But it is essential to recognize the potential benefits of ambition when pursued judiciously.

Ambition serves as a driving force behind personal growth, pushing individuals to set and achieve challenging goals. A moderate level of ambition can inspire creativity, foster resilience, and lead to a sense of fulfillment and accomplishment. Moreover, ambition often fuels innovation and progress in various fields, contributing to societal development. It gives a good chance to utilize our time properly.

It is crucial to strike a balance, emphasizing the importance of realistic goal setting and a healthy work-life balance rather than discouraging ambition altogether. Ultimately, a measured approach to ambition can lead to personal and collective success without sacrificing well-being.
