Teaching of Vocabulary
For
better comprehension students should know the meaning of new words. The teacher
should introduce these words for better understanding.
Here
are some ways the teacher can introduce the words.
1.
Draw pictures diagrams, maps.
2.
Bring maps, charts, graphs.
3.
Explain- giving examples,
4.
Miming-- gestures or actions.
5.
Act-- actions to understand the situation.
6.
Write in figures.
7.
Use symbols.
8.
Use a model.
9.
Demonstration.
10.
Taking students out of the classroom- For live experience.
11.
Bring the real thing into the classroom - first-hand experience.
12.
Translate into L1 and then exemplify in English.
13.
Give a Context and let students guess.
14.
Synonyms-- give a similar word/s.
15.
Antonym-- give word/s having opposite meaning and let the students think.
These
are some ways the teachers can deal with vocabulary. The teacher should never
give the meaning of the word in their mother tongue directly. By using
different ways the teacher can speak with the class and help the students to
find the meaning on their own. This would give students confidence to learn the
text. The students would also be fascinated to learn the new things.
