Important Instructions for Paper Setters to set an Activity Sheet

It is essential for the paper setters to know the 'What', 'Why' and 'How' of designing various activities for developing the activity sheet on the revised format.

Q.l. (A and B), Q.2. (A and B) and Q.3. (A and B)
I)   For QI.A (a seen passage from Units I to 4 in the Course book), for Q2.A (a seen passage from Units5 to 8 in the Course book) and for Q3.A (an unseen passage), the word limit for each of the selected passage should be about 250 to 300 words.
2)    The selected extracts should be thematically, contextually, semantically and syntactically complete in themselves.
3)      The unseen passages (Q.2.B. and Q3.A) should not be taken from books of reading comprehension exercises or bazaar notes, but should be from authentic sources. They should be unbiased in nature. They should not at all harm feelings of any religion, caste, creed, sect, colour, race, gender, language, province, beliefs, cultural traditions, etc.
4)      The content of unseen/non-textual passages should not have any character assassination, controversial political issues, deliberately distorted historical anecdotes, etc.
5)     In any way the content of the unseen passages, directly or indirectly, should not deflect social harmony by causing any threat to the law and order situation in society.
6)     As far as possible, the unseen passages should be related to the themes dealt with in the course book. They should be attuned to students' age and learning level.
7)    Make use of a variety of activities and avoid the repetition of similar activities across the activity sheet. Keep it in mind that we propose to test students' linguistic competence by applying thinking skills. Therefore, activities should not be the monotonous question answer drill. Activities should make students feel free from exam stress .They can deal with each activity like a joyful exercise considering it as a language game.
8)      Every activity should have a purpose and objective. Be sure about the skills to be tested through each activity: Al-Complex Factual/Global Understanding. A2-Inference/ Interpretation, A3-Conclusion/Guessing. A4-Vocabulary. AS-Personal Response.
A6-Grammar.
9)    The designs like web, table, matching, diagrams, etc. should be properly used. The difficulty level and the time management will have to be taken into consideration.
10)  Q.I (B) is for testing students' knowledge of using articles and prepositions. In addition to that it also allows testing grammar items in the syllabus which are not covered in the grammar questions in QI (A). 2(A) and 3(A).

11)  For Q.2 (B), the unseen passage for note-making should be about 150 to 200 words. It is the completion type activity which includes tabular information, tree diagram, flow chart note-completion, etc. It should demonstrate skills in recognizing classification, Similarities and contrasts.
12)  Q.3 (B) is for cultivating the skill of summary-writing. It is the exercise to be completed with the help of the given points. It is based on the passage in Q3 (A). The summary has to be precise with a suitable title.

Q.4. (Poetry)
I)      Select an extract of about 12 to 16 lines from a poem which is not from the same units selected for the prose seen passages.
2)    Select an extract which is complete in theme. There should be no break-up of lines in the stanzas as it may hamper the meaning.
3)     Use variety of activities to test the       flavour of literary language.
4)   While framing activity that is based on creativity, give optimum scope for the open-ended thinking/expression.
5)    Creativity-based activity should be varied in nature.
6)    The one given in specimen activity sheet is just an example.

Q.5. (Rapid Reading)
1.    Select two separate extracts each of about 200 to 250 words for Q5 (A)and (B).
2.    The selected passages should be complete in theme.
3.    Consider the variety of activities for both Q 5 A(I) and B(l), that are on (i) Plot (ii) Character (iii) Setting (iv) Theme (v) Language. The activity should be based on the global .understanding of the given passage.
4.    Keep variety in framing activities for both Q5 A (l) and B (2) : (i) Add your own imaginative paragraph either before or after the extract (ii) Convert dialogue into a story form or convert the extract into a dialogue form. (iii) Provide a different ending in about 50 words. (iv) Write the gist of the extract in your own words.
5.      Avoid any activity in which the student will merely have to change the personal pronouns and reproduce the extract.

Q.6. Written Communication
1. Consider variety of framing kinds of applications: leave of absence, bona-fide certificate,  
    scholarship, concessions, jobs, etc.
2. Instead of just giving instructions, provide some kind of purpose/points/ hints/ clues to help 
    students.
3. Appropriate presentation of the content along with the required layout should be given more 
    importance.
4. Give instructions with pinpoint accuracy to make all the expectations clear.
5. The topics should be attuned to students' experience, age and learning level.

Q7. (A) Framing questions for an interview
l.  Give a situation and ask students to frame a set of 8-10 questions to be asked to the interviewee.
    It should have a definite purpose.
2. The questions should be intelligent enough to focus on the person's childhood, academic
    achievements, spectacular career, odds or adversities faced, honours / awards received / future 
   plan of activities, message, etc.

(B) Preparing a speech
1.  Set a topic for developing a speech related to students' real life experience. The topic should 
     be relevant to the thematic concepts in the course book.
2.  The topic selected should not affect the social balance. It should be unbiased.

Rules :-

  1) Take the characters who are involved in the conversation.
  2) Make suitable dialogues from the given information.
 3) Attach the relevant information as a dialogue to the specific     characters.
  4) Write the dialogues in present tense.
  5) Create imaginary conversation on the basis of given extract.

Q.1.Convert the above extract into a dialogue between little Swallow, Reed and Other Swallows. (2)
            One night there flew over the city a little Swallow. His friends had gone away to Egypt six weeks before, but he had stayed behind, for he was in love with the most beautiful Reed. He had met her early in the spring as he was flying down the river after a big yellow moth, and had been so attracted by her slender waist that he had stopped to talk to her.
            “Shall I love you?’ said the Swallow, who liked to come to the point at once, and the Reed made him a low bow. So he flew round and round her, touching the water with his wings, and making silver ripples. This was his courtship, and it lasted all through the summer.
            “It is a ridiculous attachment,” twittered the other Swallows; “she has no money, and far too many relations”; and indeed the river was quite full of Reeds. Then, when the autumn came they all flew away.

Answer-

Swallow-   Hi Reed!

Reed-         Hello!

Swallow-  My all friends are going to fly for Egypt. Some had already gone to Egypt. I stay here for my dear Reed.

Reed-        Oh, How good of you?

Swallow-  Oh Reed! You are really beautiful. When I was flying down the river after a big yellow moth, your slender waist attracted me.

Reed-       It feels good to me.

Swallow-   Shall I love you?

Dialogue Writing- Writing Skill Topic

Dialogue writing is the process of transcribing a conversation between two or more people in written format. It is an important part of the writing skill section.

How to write dialogues-

Writing effective dialogues between two characters is crucial for showing good communication. It's a creative work. Dialogues can be part of a story, a play or a movie. It's a challenge to our imagination. Good dialogues send proper information and message.

Here are some tips to write dialogues:

Character traits:

Ensure each character has a distinct quality. It reflects his or her personality, background, and experiences. This helps readers differentiate between speakers.

Observational Detail:

Use descriptive details to convey emotions, body language, and facial expressions. Show how characters react to each other's words through their actions.

Subtext:

Incorporate subtext and hidden meanings to add depth to your dialogues. Not everything needs to be said explicitly; sometimes, what's left unsaid can be more powerful.

Natural Flow:

Make dialogues sound natural and conversational. Avoid overly formal language unless it fits the context of the scene.

Structure:

Use short and clear words instead of longer and more reflective ones to keep the dialogue engaging.

Conflict and Tension:

Introduce conflict or tension within the dialogue to create interest. It could be a difference in opinions, unspoken conflicts, or unresolved issues between the characters.

Show, Don't Tell:

Instead of directly stating emotions or information, show them through the characters' words and actions. This allows readers to connect with the characters on a deeper level.

Listen to Real Conversations:

Pay attention to how people talk in real life. Listen to conversations, notice speech patterns, and observe how emotions are expressed. This can inspire more authentic dialogue in your writing.

Purposeful Dialogue:

Every line of dialogue should serve a purpose, whether it's advancing the plot, revealing character traits, or providing essential information.

Remember that practice is key to improving your dialogue-writing skills. Experiment with different styles, study dialogue in literature you admire, and be open to feedback from others to refine your draft.

Other Tips-

1) Determine the purpose of dialogue.

2) Decide on the characters.

3) Start a new paragraph for each speaker.

4) Capitalize only the beginning of sentences.

5) Use proper punctuation.

6) Indent each paragraph.

Activity No. 1
Write an imaginary dialogue between a Passenger and S.T. Inquiry Clerk. Use the following hints- Inquire about bus fare, frequency, discount, bus availability for return journey etc.

Passenger: Excuse me, could you help me with the bus fare and timing for Nashik?

Inquiry Clerk: Of course! The fare for going to Nashik is Rs. 185. Buses run every 30 minutes, and the next one is scheduled to leave in about 10 minutes.

Passenger: Great, thanks! Is there a discount for seniors or students?

Inquiry Clerk: Yes, there is. Seniors and students with a valid ID can get a discounted fare of half price. Just make sure to have your ID ready when you are on the bus.

Passenger: Perfect, I'll keep that in mind. And what's the last bus for the night? I might be returning late.

Inquiry Clerk: The last bus for Nashik to Chalisgaon departs at 10:30 PM. After that, there's a Shivneri Bus available that runs every hour, but keep in mind that the fare for this bus is Rs. 220.

Passenger: Got it, 10:30 PM it is. Thanks for the info!

Student 2: Yeah, I did! I'm actually pretty excited about it. It's been a while since we had something like this.

Student 1: Absolutely! I heard they're encouraging students to showcase their own projects and experiments. Are you thinking of participating?

Student 2: Yeah, I'm considering it. I've been working on this cool physics experiment that demonstrates the principles of magnetism. I think it could be a hit at the exhibition. What about you? Do you have anything in mind to exhibit?

Student 1: Yeah, I'm working on a biology project. I've been studying the effects of different types of fertilizers on the growth of plants. I've set up a series of experiments to compare the growth rates, and I'm planning to present my findings at the exhibition.

Student 1: That's a practical and relevant topic! I'm sure it will be informative for everyone who visits your exhibit.

Mukesh: (Replying) I am going to market to purchase  some colours to celebrate our traditional festival, Holi.

Rakesh: Oh ! I see. It means you are going to spoil our environment on the name of celebration.

Mukesh: (Surprisingly) What do you mean?

Rakesh : I mean, you are spoiling our environment by using colours, pipe organ that creates noise pollution, water guns and water balloons, etc.

Mukesh: (Curiously )How?

Rakesh: The use of such things affects one of the most important elements of the environment i.e water. We also indirectly burn the jungle by lighting 🔥 Holi. It causes to increase the heat in the atmosphere.

Mukesh: Yes, cutting of the trees to get wood, fuel also affects the environment.

Rakesh: Absolutely right!

Mukesh: Then, how can we celebrate our traditional festival, Holi ? We have to buy these things for the  pleasure of our children.We, adults also play colours.

Rakesh: Yes Mukesh. We buy such things for the joy of our children  , but we should tell them to celebrate Holi in a different manner .

Mukesh: Rakesh, you have opened my eyes. I will tell my children to use only natural colours.

Rakesh : Good. We can save water by using natural colours (made from flowers or leaves) as they need less water to remove them from our skin.

Mukesh: Yes.We can protect our skin or eyes from the chemicals too.

Rakesh: We should also tell our children not to blow the pipe organ that creates harsh defeaning sound and creates noise pollution.

Mukesh: Yes, my friend. Children enjoy throwing  water balloons at each other, but it is also the wastage of water. It also creates rubbish and pollutes the land.

Rakesh: Let's resolute to  celebrate Eco-friendly and healthy holi by avoiding the use of such things. Let's use only dry colours or just to greet/ wish each other on this auspicious day. And burn the evils, vices that are in us.

*🌟Reading*
Learn at least five new vocabulary words everyday. If you learn five words a day, that’s 1,825 words per year. Considering that the average high school student probably has a vocabulary of 5,000 to 6,000 words, in a few years your vocabulary should be sufficient enough to understand nearly everything written in English.

*🌟Listening:*
Listen to talk radio. The objective of listening to English is to hear as many words as possible in as short a period as possible. The more times you hear a word, the better you will be able to use that word. There is no more efficient way to do this than talk radio. The key is to listen as often as possible. If you can, try keeping the radio on while you go to sleep so it's the last thing you hear while falling asleep and the first thing you hear as you wake up.

*🌟Writing:*
Keep a journal and write at least 500 words per day. By writing every day you will be reinforcing everything you have learned. It will also force you to question the accuracy of what you are writing ,but be sure to challenge yourself with new vocabulary and various grammar structures.

*🌟Speaking:*
Reading aloud allows you to practice perfectly. By reading aloud you are speaking grammatically perfect English. In a typical one hour conversation, you might speak for 30 minutes with a number of errors, but if you read aloud, you can speak for one hour without any grammar mistakes using new vocabulary words.
