Std. XI - First Term Exam- Activity Sheet

First Term Exam- Activity Sheet

Std. XI (Marks: 50)

Time- Two and Half Hours

------------------------------------------------------------------------

     Section I- Prose

Q.1 (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below. (12)

I have been asked many times, “Who was first?” When we were within reach of the summit, I did not think of who was going to be “first.” I am sure that Hillary was not thinking that. Climbing takes all your attention. You have many more important worries.

What does it matter whether I reached the top first or Hillary? Our main thought was that both of us reach the top. We had to. One couldn’t do it alone.

If there had been a difference of one thousand feet between us, then one could make the claim that he was first. But even then, only the man behind him could confirm the distance between the two of them.

When we reached Kathmandu we discovered that a controversy had arisen. We talked it over, Hillary, Colonel Hunt and I. We agreed that all the talk was childish.

So we made a pact, and each of us signed it in the office of the Prime Minister of Nepal. Each one signed his own statement. I have a copy of Hillary’s statement which I carry in my pocket.

It reads: “Kathmandu, June 22, 1953.”

“On May 29th, Tenzing Sherpa and I left our high camp on Mt. Everest for our attempt on the summit. As we climbed upwards to the South Summit, first one and then the other would take a turn at leading.

We crossed over the South Summit and moved along the Summit ridge. We reached the summit almost together. We embraced each other overjoyed at our success, then I took photograph of Tenzing holding aloft the flags of Great Britain, Nepal, the United Nations and India.” (Signed: E.P. Hillary) There is another paper like this in English, signed by me. Thus, we will not take part in any controversy. As the statement says, Hillary and I embraced when we reached the top. We did as well as our bulky equipment would let us. I remember saying to him: “We have done it.” But we couldn’t hear. We had our oxygen mask on.

Q.2. (A) Read the extract and complete the activities given below. (5)

When shoes were first made, they were made flat without a heel. Since normal walking requires that the heel of the foot should strike the ground before the toes, these early shoes used to wear out quickly at the heel, prompting shoemakers to reinforce the heel, and so creating heeled shoes.

Women have been wearing high- heeled shoes for centuries in the pursuit of fashion. However, regularly wearing shoes with high heels can be hazardous. The biggest risk, perhaps, is losing your balance and breaking an ankle. Wearing high heels interferes with your normal gait. They throw your weight forward, making it difficult to sustain upright balance. They force you to use a lot of extra muscular effort to keep from falling forward.  Much of this extra effort is concentrated in the lower back arch, which can lead to back pain. Experts warn that high heels can also result in a variety of foot problems, including metatarsalgia, which is pain in the ball of the foot. Another condition called Morton's neuroma, which is 10 times more common in women than men, is caused by the thickening of tissue around a nerve between the third and fourth toes. It usually envelops in response to imitation and excessive pressure, such as the burden of weight high heels place on the ball of the foot.

However, if one cannot resist wearing 'heels, the following tips can help to   keep your feet healthy.

Always wear the correct fit. Have both feet measured the next time you buy shoes. You will probably find that one foot is larger than the other – always buy shoes to fit the larger foot, never buy shoes that are too tight. Buy shoes later in the day when your feet are a bit swollen. Never wear a heel higher than 6.5 cm. Only buy heels that you are comfortable in.

d)     Always wear a heel higher than 6.5 cm.

A2. Complex Factual  (2)

Looking on, I feel a thrill.
Black and high, his silhouette
Dominates the furrows deep!

Marches he along the plain
To and fro, and scatters wide
From his hands the precious grain;
Muse I, as I see him stride.

How to write E-Mail Writing

Points to be remembered-

1) E – Mail must be written in the template. Its simple format is given here. Draw such template in the exam.

2) Write e – mail ID of the addressee imaginary if it is not given.

3) There will be no completion activity for e – mail in the exam.

4) Make sure that your emails stand out because of the content, and not because of sloppy mistakes, poor formatting, or casual language.

5) CC-The carbon copy. It is just like the physical carbon copy. CC is an easy way to send copies of an email to other people. If you’ve ever received a CCed email, you’ve probably noticed that it will be addressed to you and a list of other people who have also been CCed.

6) BCC stands for “blind carbon copy.” Just like CC, BCC is a way of sending copies of an email to other people. The difference between the two is that, while you can see a list of recipients when CC is used, that's not the case with BCC.

7) Subject Line- Don't forget to include a clear Subject Line in your email. Use the subject line to summarize why you are emailing.

8) Salutation- Use an appropriate salutation.

Dear Mr. /Ms. Chavan or

Respected General Manager

9) First Paragraph

The first paragraph of your email should include information on why you are writing. Be clear and direct.

10) Middle Paragraph

The next section of your email message should describe what you have to offer or what type of assistance you are seeking for or what kind of problems/ information you want to share.

11) Final Paragraph

Conclude your email by thanking the receiver. One line is sufficient here.

12) End: Email Signature- First Name and Last Name OR (XYZ)
